Three years nine months

This is my least favourite age so far.  For some reason, two of my children hit a real ‘yuck’ patch at this age, lasting at least six months.

One of my favourite child development psychologists, Isabella Granic, has a fabulous series of posts about what’s going on in those sweet little heads: 3-12-years-old-part-i-its-all-in-their-heads.html, and 3-12-years-old-part-ii-readers-question-about-waking-up-and-staying-up.html. Her focus is on how these changes can affect sleep, but the background knowledge is gold for any parent.

Did you notice any changes around this age? How did you cope?

Oh yes!!! You know this and have helped me with showing light at the tunnel. Right now, at about 4.25 yrs old, we seem to be improving and hitting a good patch (now I hope I didn't just jinx myself!) But I was thrown by this for sure as I didn't really expect it at this age. You always here about "Terrible Two's" but in all honesty they weren't bad. I think preschoolers are more challenging as they are learning SO much so quickly and asserting themselves more, and cause and effect, etc (obviously younger kids too but it's on a much bigger scale at this age). The good news is there is lots to love as well and I really do enjoy this age, such as their sense of humor and attempts on telling jokes, etc.

Yes, I found this age much harder than the 18month or 2.5year old leaps. It's almost like the tantrums etc they do at the younger ages are just practising for this monumental leap! But it's balanced by the fun of listening to their thought processes. :-)

oh I'm loving hearing their thoughts, but we have hit this for sure with Sadie. Mia Bella is probably going to watch a while and then jump in (that's more her style). It's like a Tale Of Two Cities, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" ....
