Why I Bother Learning Old-Fashioned Skills: Sewing

One of the skills I learned as a young girl from my mother was to sew. She taught me the basic stitches of plain sewing and embroidery, and when I reached secondary school, I enrolled in lessons in machine sewing. I learned to measure and cut to a pattern, pin, sew, and finish the garments.

I learned to sew mainly because I enjoyed it, and embroidery in particular was my favourite hobby for a number of years.

After I left school, I rarely used these skills, apart from occasionally mending a loose hem or replacing a button.

But as a stay-at-home-mom, these skills have become very useful and save the family money. I have enjoyed creating dresses for my little girl, mending rips in my husband’s work clothes, and creating maternity clothes for myself. And presently, I am having a lot of fun helping to create costumes for the school concert.

When the right time comes, I fully intend to teach both my boys and my girl the fundamentals of sewing, because it has been so useful in my life.

Do you sew? When and how did you learn? Has it proved to be a useful skill?

My grandmother just came to visit, and brought her old Singer sewing machine that she no longer uses to give to me!!!! I am aware that this is gold. I guess I know the basics from watching, but other than that don't know how to sew. I was wondering how good a use of my time it would be to learn, and I'm glad to see this post!

Using the machine is the easy part! ;-) Cutting out, pinning, and sewing pattern pieces together correctly takes patience and a puzzle-solving mentality... But I find it is very rewarding financially and creatively. Good luck!

Since becoming a stay-at-home-mum I have also started teaching myself to sew - and I'm loving it! I still have a lot to learn, but I love the thriftiness of it, as well as keeping my brain working as I learn a new skill (as well as patience!) and it gives me a creative outlet.

Good for you, Jo! What have you been working on so far?

Mostly I am making pants for my DS. Since he is so small, it doesn't take a lot of fabric, so it's very cheap. I also make very simple things like shopping bags or table runners. There are some amazing blogs and resources online for sewing, and lots of free patterns, so it can be very economical. I am hoping to gradually increase my skills to make my own clothes too!
