Tired of Cooking?

I don’t know about you, but I regularly get tired, bored, and unmotivated to cook meals. For some reason, I don’t have this issue with housework - perhaps because I have structured it so that I have different chores each day? - but the never-ending duty of putting food on the table can definitely grate on me.

So here are the good, bad and ugly strategies I have tried when I start feeling this way:

  • whine and complain
  • demand takeaway
  • politely request (ie order) my DH into a once-weekly cooking roster
  • delay until the last possible minute in hope that someone (ie DH) will volunteer; sometimes the self-enforced time constraints inspire creativity!
  • accept all offers for eating out
  • confront my poor attitude in prayer
  • brain-storm meal ideas with DH. He is less skilled but way more creative than me, so his meal ideas always shake things up a bit and get me out of my rut.
  • plan a tv picnic dinner. Somehow the same old food eaten on the floor while watching a silly kids movie makes everything more fun.
Do you get tired of cooking? What do you do to get the creative juices flowing again?

Good topic, Penny! I get into a making-dinner-mope too sometimes. It is a lot of work to do that every day! On top of breakfast, lunch, and snacks, of course. As usual, I don't have any fool-proof answers. I think there are three things I do: 1.) Complain. Sometimes it helps, sometimes DH does dinner. 2.) Peruse a different cookbook or cooking system every couple of months for things that might fit for us. 3.) Just trudge into the kitchen no matter how I feel and start cooking (slowly, b/c that's how I move when I'm being mopey). Then I start to warm up, realize it's half done or at least started, and cheer up.
