Why I Bother Learning Old-Fashioned Skills: Line-Drying

Australian Women's Weekly advertisement 10 Aug 1955
Well, this one’s a no-brainer to me. I am fortunate enough to live in a climate which has a lot of hot, dry weather, so line-drying is just common sense. However, for those of you who have not considered it, here are the pros and cons as I see them.

Electric dryers :
  • cost money
  • don’t save much time
  • don’t save much effort
Line-drying:
  • is free
  • gets you outside in the sunshine
  • helps bleach and sanitise laundry (especially cloth diapers)
  • can help cut down on ironing
The only positive I can see with an electric dryer is for use in wet or humid climates. For us, however, there are only a few times in the middle of our winter when I could use one, and generally hanging the laundry indoors overnight is enough to get it dry.

Do you line-dry your laundry? Why or why not?
