This book continues on where Terrific Toddlers (One) ended. It is written for parents who have implemented a flexible routine as outlined in TT1, and are wondering ‘what next?’. The book is based on Christian principles, and includes Scripture references following each chapter, but the language is easily accessible by unchurched and non-Christian families.
In Mel’s own words, TT2 “aims to give you just a few ideas on how to move to the next and most enjoyable part of parenting. Building happy, healthy hearts.” (TT2, Introduction).
The book begins by summarising TT1, then discusses the importance of the character we model for our children, and the way that training can and should be done in the context of our daily routine. She then goes on to look at eight key character qualities, such as self control, kindness, and patience, and details practical ways of teaching these with many examples from her own life. The book ends with a chapter of questions from moms, and special “Dad to Dad” chapter written by Mel’s husband, Kris.
I found this book less immediately applicable than TT1, but more thought-provoking. TT1 is a ”how-to” manual, and a life-saver for desperate moms; but TT2 is for those who are interested in more than just survival.
I recommend this book very highly to those who want help to train up their children in the way they should go, regardless of whether or not they have read TT1, and regardless of whether or not they are Christians.
Let me know what you think!
